“Where Your Future Begins Tomorrow”

Although Mahina State administrators acknowledged faculty had the freedom to teach and advise as they thought best, no one was permitted to tell a student they should not major in engineering. Not when our STEM Education grant was up for renewal next year.

When our administration started to use the professor-rating site to evaluate faculty performance, we stepped up to power-user status, flooding the site with positive evaluations for ourselves and for one another. Thanks to this strategy, Pat, Emma, and I were the three highest-ranked faculty members at Mahina State University.
This is not where I expected to end up. By “this,” I mean an eight-hour team-building retreat in the Administrative Complex at remote Mahina State University, in Mahina, Hawaii where, according to our radio spots, “Your Future Begins Tomorrow.”

Unlike the Mahina State library, the Mahina State student gym was open on Sunday. Also unlike our library, it was packed with students.

Mahina State both underpaid and understaffed the IT department. The predictable result was the kind of employee turnover you might expect to find among the Borgia family’s food-tasting staff.
